Few names carry as much weight in song as Grace, and nowhere is that more true than in the hymn rooted in John Newton's eighteenth-century writing. Amazing Grace, widely treated as a traditional piece, is a spare, devotional melody built around a feeling of unearned rescue. Countless singers have shaped it to their own voices, but its core remains a simple, escalating confession of wonder, the name itself standing in for divine mercy rather than any one person.

Centuries later the name turns inward and becomes personal. Jeff Buckley's 1994 track Grace is a sweeping, late-night rock record, built on long falsetto lines and slow-burning guitar that eventually breaks into a hard, churning climax. The grace here feels fragile and mortal, a name given to a lover the narrator fears losing. U2's Grace, from 2000, is cooler and more reflective: a hushed, gliding track where the name becomes a quiet force that "makes beauty out of ugly things." Mika's 2007 Grace Kelly is entirely different, a bright, theatrical pop song full of rapid piano and crisp vocal flips, the name wielded as a measure of charm the singer doubts he can match.

Not every use is so prominent. Apocalyptica's 2010 Grace is an instrumental, letting cellos carry the melody with a dark, steady ache, while Supergrass's 1999 Grace moves on a brisk, bluesy swing, treating the name as something rough-edged and close to home. In all of them the name is less a label than a feeling: mercy, dread, elegance, affection.
